How to auto-download new torrents from RSS feeds with follow rules

Short answer

Follow at least one provider, then open Follow rules in the sidebar, turn on Auto-download and click New rule. Enter the words the title must contain (or a regular expression), add exclude words, a minimum seed count and maximum size, and choose the save folder and label. Keep Only items published from now on ticked to skip the existing backlog.

Follow rules turn TorMonitor into an RSS downloader: whenever a followed provider publishes something that matches, it's added to your torrents in the folder and label you chose.

Before you start#

Rules work on the providers you follow. If you haven't added any yet, see how to monitor torrent providers with RSS and Torznab.

Steps to create a follow rule#

  1. Click Follow rules in the sidebar and make sure the Auto-download switch at the top is on.
  2. Click New rule and give it a Rule name, such as the show you follow. Keep Enabled ticked.
  3. Type the words every title must contain in Must contain all words (for example ubuntu desktop amd64), or turn on Regex to write a Regular expression instead.
  4. Add Exclude words (comma separated) for releases you never want, such as beta, server.
  5. Optionally set Min seeds and Max size (MB).
  6. Next to Providers, keep All followed or pick specific providers.
  7. Choose Save in (leave it empty for your default download folder) and a label.
  8. Tick Add stopped if you want to review matches before they start.
  9. Keep Only items published from now on (skip the current backlog) ticked so the rule doesn't add everything already in the feed.
  10. Check the preview, "Currently matching N cached item(s)", to see what the rule would catch, then click Save.

Check Recent activity on the Follow rules page to see what each rule added this session.

Writing good rules#

  • Be specific. "Must contain all words" with the exact title, edition and format avoids near-matches.
  • Use exclusions for the variants you don't want: betas, other editions, other formats.
  • A regular expression like ^ubuntu-\d+\.04-desktop-amd64\.iso$ matches only the long-term-support desktop releases.
  • Min seeds keeps out fakes and dead uploads; Max size keeps out unexpected bundles.

To pause all rules at once, turn off the Auto-download switch on the Follow rules page (the same setting is Allow follow rules to add torrents automatically under Preferences ▸ Providers).

Questions#

How often are feeds checked?#

Each provider is checked on its own interval. The default for new providers is set under Preferences ▸ Providers.

Will a rule download the same episode twice?#

Items are de-duplicated by info-hash and title across providers, and torrents already in your list are not added again.

Are follow rules free?#

Yes.
